Hostels have become the cornerstone of backpacking adventures in recent years. Evolving from simple bunk beds to vibrant social hubs, they offer a safe space for travellers to connect, have fun, and create lasting memories. Drawing from my extensive backpacking experience, I’ve encountered both exceptional and disappointing hostels, firmly believing that a subpar hostel can sour an otherwise fantastic trip.
In this post, I’ve curated a comprehensive list of every hostel I’ve stayed in, accompanied by my personal insights, a rating out of 10, and direct links to their Hostelworld and Booking.com pages for convenient booking. It’s important to note that my opinions are subjective, and while a hostel may not have suited my preferences, it may still be a perfect fit for others—and vice versa. As I continue my travels, I’ll regularly update this list, so be sure to check back here for the latest updates, especially if you’re following my adventures on TikTok or Instagram!

The hostel is located in Tower Hamlets and is within walking distance from the underground. It was approximately $50 AUD a night when I stayed and that does not include breakfast which you can Add for $14 AUD a night. The breakfast was basic so you would be better off buying groceries from the Sainsbury’s around the corner and cooking in their kitchen facilities which were quite good. The rooms are basic but clean and the bathroom is in the room. The bunks aren’t allocated so you get whichever bed is free. Basic socket and light but no curtains. The bar downstairs is a nice area to chill out and they sometimes run activities.

Small Hostel located above a pub in Lambeth and walking distance from Waterloo Station. Rooms were around $50 AUD a night without breakfast which can be added for $18 AUD. The rooms are basic and the bunks are in a three-high format which I don’t like and the bunks are allocated so you don’t get to choose. No curtains and basic plug and light in each bunk. No kitchen facilities and hard to meet people as the only common area is the pub.

This hostel is located on Margaret Island, a car-free island, but there is a bus stop not far from the hostel. There are a few bars and restaurants on the island near the hostel, which is very peaceful. The hostel has a great terrace area with great views and is a great spot to chill out. The rooms are basic and each room has a bathroom. I paid $30 AUD a night when I stayed. I didn’t feel like the hostel had a very social vibe.

This centrally located hostel has two buildings. One that is attached to its bar/restaurant and one at the other end of the street that just has rooms. The beds are super basic and there is a small kitchen and common area. The bathrooms are shared between all rooms but are huge and clean. The room was roughly $50 AUD a night and no breakfast was supplied. There are no activities planned by the hostel and I didn’t find it very social.

This hostel is located right in town and has gorgeous views of the loch from the common area. Rooms are basic and the bathroom is located in each room. There is a kitchen which had plenty of space and they do provide a breakfast for purchase. The room cost approximately $65 a night and when I stayed a school group was there so it wasn’t very social.

This hostel is a little out of the way but it is easy enough to get back into the city either on public transport or walking. There are a few common areas and the rooms are basic and each one has a bathroom. There is a kitchen in the basement. They offer free tea and coffee in the lobby and you can buy some snacks from reception. Rooms were around $55 AUD per night and while I did meet people here in my dorm it’s not an overly social hostel.

This hostel is located within walking distance from the bus station and is close to many bars and restaurants. The rooms are small and basic and the hostel has a small common area and kitchen. There is a bathroom located on the ground floor and also on the 1st floor. The staff at this hostel have to be the kindest I have come across. The hostel is located quite centrally to everything and is very social as they host a group dinner for a small fee each night and then a bar crawl every night at 11 pm. The rooms are small and basic and each floor has a communal bathroom. The beds are allocated by number on check-in so be sure to message ahead of time if you need a bottom bunk. There is also a gorgeous rooftop terrace with a very small pool and stunning views. I highly recommend staying here when visiting Barcelona.

The location of this hostel is amazing. It is so close to the main areas which can be tough to find in Italy. The building is quite old and the rooms are super basic but they offer free breakfast with many options which for $45 a night was great value. The beds are first come first serve. This hostel is located near Termini in Rome and has a metro stop around the corner so the main attractions of Rome are accessible but there is not much to do in this area itself. The rooms were spacious but you do have to make your own bed which I hate. The beds are allocated by number on check-in so be sure to message ahead of time if you need a bottom bunk. There were two bathrooms in my dorm which was nice. I didn’t find this hostel social and found it hard to meet people. Camere Carlo (not a hostel)
8/10
This is not a hostel per se but they are hard to come by on the Cinque Terre and I recommend you stay in a town if possible so this is a private room but it was the cheapest I could find right in town. I booked the small double room which includes a double bed, private bathroom, fridge and a kettle. I paid $160 AUD per night and it was so worth it to be able to be in Vernazza before the crowds in the morning and after they left at night.

This property is only a bus stop away from the centre of town and is easily walkable if you want but there is a bus every 20 minutes. The rooms are basic and are a mix of single beds and bunk beds and it’s first in gets first pick. The majority of the people staying here are doing the Mont Blanc hike and it is very easy to meet people. The property is also across the road from a lake that has stunning views of the snow-capped mountains. There is a bar onsite which does a meal deal each night or has a standard menu. I paid $75 a night which is a great price for Chamonix and includes breakfast.

I loved this hostel! it is located right in the heart of the old town and they have a free breakfast each day but they also host a free group dinner with an hour of free beer you just have to sign up each day at the reception. This is a great way to meet people and gives this place such a social vibe. They also run a bar crawl each night but most people form groups at the dinner and head out on their own. the rooms are basic and there are shared bathrooms on each floor. The view of the Matterhorn from this hostel is incredible! It is within walking distance from the train station but there are some stairs on the walk. The beds are first in gets to pick. I paid $75 AUD a night when I stayed and that includes breakfast, you can pay an extra $30 AUD and get a full three-course dinner which I think is worth it as the food was really good.

The majority of the hostels in Mostar have a similar format. They feel like a homestay as they are converted homes. Hostel David only has 4 rooms and a small courtyard area but it creates a really social vibe. The hostel also runs a daily tour which takes you to a number of the popular sites you can’t reach without transport. There are only 6 spaces on the tour each day as it is just in the owner’s car but I highly recommend taking the trip. I paid $25 AUD a night here and there is a small kitchen if you want to cook.

This hostel is located right inside the entrance to the old town. As with the rest of Dubrovnik, there are a lot of stairs not only to reach the hostel but also to get to your room. The room on the top floor has great views and a basic kitchen. There’s not a lot of space in the hostel but the owner makes sure to get to know everyone and he does offer a walking tour of the city. Every backpacker I met while travelling that had come from Montenegro recommended this hostel and I can see why. This hostel is right in the old town and they run amazing daily activities! You have to do the Sunset BBQ and Boat Party if you stay at this hostel. The rooms are large and the beds have curtains and the bathrooms are shared on each floor. There were a few different buildings but I stayed in the building that had the pool which was cool. The common area is located in another building but most travellers hang out in there so it was super social and all of the volunteers make it a great experience. This hostel is only 5 minutes walk from the old port which is a fantastic location however the dorms are 20 person and due to the layouts of the bunks there is little to no privacy. The beds are also built into the walls. I had a bed that was in the middle corridor which meant it was open on both sides with people walking by all the time. The bed was also very thin and short so I felt really uncomfortable. The hostel has a rooftop pool area which overlooks the old town which is nice but it’s a bit old and rundown.
