Explore the Magic of Barcelona: Top Things To Do & Where To Stay

06/02/2024

Barcelona, the city where the streets are paved with paella and the buildings are made of Gaudi. The city where you can work off your tapas by taking a stroll through Park Guell, or by running away from the pick pocketers in La Rambla. The city where you can take in the stunning views of the Sagrada Familia, and then head to the beach to work on your tan. Barcelona, where the sun is always shining, and the sangria is always flowing!

From museums to live music to trendy bars and clubs, there is something for everyone, no matter what your taste in entertainment. If you are planning a trip to Barcelona this guide will help you have an unforgettable experience.

Top 10 activities to add to your Barcelona itinerary

Barcelona is a city with a wide variety of activities to suit all interests. I have compiled a list of some popular things to do in the city:

  1. Visit the Sagrada Familia: This iconic church, designed by architect Antoni Gaudí, is a must-see in Barcelona. The intricate exterior features unique sculptural elements, such as the Nativity Façade, while the interior boasts stunning stained-glass windows that bathe the space in colourful light. To make the most of your visit, be sure to book your timed entry in advance, as this popular landmark fills up quickly. You can choose a standard entry ticket or, for a closer look at Gaudí’s designs, opt to climb one of the towers. Book your entry ticket here.
  2. Take a walk-through Park Güell: Designed by Gaudí, this vibrant public park offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Admire the colourful mosaic benches, whimsical sculptures, and unique architectural elements while enjoying panoramic views of Barcelona. To secure your preferred time and date, consider booking your visit in advance. You can combine this experience with a visit to the Sagrada Familia to make the most of your day. Book your ticket here or get a combo ticket with the Sagrada Familia here.
  3. Explore the Gothic Quarter: Immerse yourself in Barcelona’s rich history by wandering through the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter. Discover medieval buildings, charming plazas, and hidden gems tucked away in this atmospheric neighbourhood. Don’t miss the stunning Barcelona Cathedral and take the time to stop for a coffee or tapas in one of the cosy cafés or restaurants.
  4. Visit the Picasso Museum: Art enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Picasso Museum, which houses an extensive collection of works by the renowned Spanish artist. Immerse yourself in Picasso’s artistic journey and gain a deeper understanding of his creative process. Be sure to check the museum’s opening hours and consider booking your tickets online to avoid long queues.
  5. Take a day trip to Montserrat: Escape the city and venture to Montserrat, a breathtaking mountain range located just outside of Barcelona. Take a scenic train or cable car ride to the top and be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the surrounding landscapes. Don’t forget to visit the monastery, which is home to the revered Black Madonna. Plan your trip ahead and check transportation schedules for a seamless experience. Book a guided tour here.
  6. Go on a food tour: Barcelona is known for its delicious food, and a food tour is a great way to sample some of the local dishes and learn about the city’s culinary culture. You can book a Tipsy Tapas walking tour here.
  7. Enjoy the beaches: Barcelona has several beaches, such as Barceloneta Beach, Nova Icaria Beach, etc. that offer a variety of activities such as swimming, sunbathing, and beach sports.
  8. Visit the La Boqueria market: This bustling market is a great place to find fresh produce, seafood, and other local products. It is a great place to explore, even if you’re not looking to buy anything.
  9. Take a bike tour: This is a great way to explore the city and see many of the sights in a short amount of time. It is a unique way to see the city and get some exercise at the same time. You can book an e-bike tour of all of the main sights here.
  10. Catch a live music or flamenco show: Barcelona has a thriving music scene and is home to many venues that feature live music and flamenco shows. This is a great way to experience the city’s vibrant culture. You can book a show at the town hall theatre here.

These are just a few of the many activities that Barcelona has to offer. Whether you’re interested in history, art, or food, or just want to experience the energy of the city, there is something for everyone in Barcelona.

Where to eat in Barcelona

Barcelona is a food lover’s paradise, with a wide variety of delicious dining options to choose from. Here are a few of my favourite restaurants and bars:

  1. Can Ramonet – A family-run restaurant that serves traditional Catalan cuisine, including mouth-watering dishes like roast pork and potatoes. This place is only a short walk from Barceloneta beach so is a great stop for some tapas and some drinks after a swim.
  2. La Flauta – Traditional dining room known for its seafood tapas. This was my favourite Tapas restaurant I tried in Barcelona! If you go be sure to order the Spanish Omelette, crispy camembert skewer and the grilled red shrimps.
  3. Mercat de la Boqueria – A bustling market hall that offers an array of food stalls and restaurants, where you can sample everything from paella to freshly squeezed juice.
  4. Cal Pep – A lively tapas bar that is famous for its fresh seafood and traditional Spanish dishes, like grilled octopus and fried potatoes.
  5. The Orient Express – This offbeat bar offers cocktails made to your choosing of flavour profile and delivers them to you via a train set into the tabletop. Truly a unique experience and so much fun!

This list is just a few of the many incredible dining options that Barcelona has to offer. So whether you’re in the mood for a traditional Spanish meal, or something more contemporary, this city has something to satisfy every palate.

Where to stay in Barcelona

When it comes to accommodation in Barcelona, there are plenty of options.

For those on a budget, hostels are a great option. There are many hostels in the city that offer dormitory-style accommodation, as well as private rooms.

My favourite hostel in Barcelona is Sant Jordi’s Rock Palace. This hostel has a great location, super helpful and friendly staff and there are so many activities each day that make it so easy to meet people. From breakfast in the morning, and the pool area on the rooftop to the daily family dinners and nightly bar crawls.

For those looking for something a little more upscale, there are also many mid-range and luxury hotels in Barcelona. These options generally offer more amenities, such as room service, fitness centres, and on-site restaurants.

For a more authentic experience, you can also choose to stay in a traditional Spanish apartment or vacation rental. This can be a great way to live like a local and experience the city like a resident. Many vacation rentals can also be found in historic buildings, which is a great way to experience the city’s architecture.

No matter what your budget or preference, Barcelona has a wide range of accommodation options to choose from, so you’re sure to find the perfect place to rest your head after a long day of exploring this vibrant city.

Ready to experience the magic of Barcelona for yourself? With its rich history, stunning architecture, delicious cuisine, and beautiful beaches, this vibrant city has something to offer everyone. So book your trip today, and get ready to fall in love with this stunning destination. Whether you’re a first-time traveller or a seasoned explorer, Barcelona is sure to leave you with unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.
