Airlie Beach is a charming coastal town that truly captures the essence of tropical paradise. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be captivated by its crystal-clear waters, lush greenery, and stunning natural beauty.
The town is the perfect starting point for exploring the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands, both of which offer breathtaking opportunities for outdoor adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or a first-time scuba diver, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to discover the incredible underwater world that lies just off the coast of Airlie Beach.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed pace, take a stroll along the bustling esplanade and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the town. There, you’ll find a variety of restaurants, cafes, and shops that offer something for everyone.
At night, Airlie Beach comes to life with a buzzing nightlife scene that offers everything from live music and beachfront bars to late-night clubs and dance parties.
If you are a solo traveller or backpacking the area, I would highly recommend the Atlantic Clipper or New Horizon sailing tour of the Whitsunday Islands. I booked the New Horizon, but they didn’t have enough numbers, so they combined the two tours together and we went on the Atlantic clipper. It is an amazing experience sleeping anchored between two of the islands and waking up and being able to soak up the beauty without the crowds. Also, these tours are super social! I met so many people during this tour and made friends that I continued travelling with after this up to Cairns.
Things to do
Airlie Beach may only be a small town but it offers a variety of activities for travellers to enjoy, including:
- Sail on the Whitsundays – New Horizon/ Atlantic clipper – These boat tours are targeted at young travellers 18-35 who are looking to meet new people and see the sights whilst in the Whitsundays. When I went, we had overcast weather, so it wasn’t the best time for seeing the sights but the people on board made up for this completely and it was honestly one of the highlights of my trip. I still keep in touch with multiple people from the boat and I even ended up travelling with some of them for the rest of my journey. The boat has plenty of activities to keep you entertained and you get to see all the sights.
- Snorkelling and scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands. There are plenty of different tours you can book but I love a sailing ship so you can book a sailing tour to Whitehaven beach that includes snorkelling here.
- Exploring the lush tropical forests and scenic hiking trails in the Whitsunday Islands National Park. Or if you don’t feel like walking you can book a segway tour here.
- Enjoying water sports like jet skiing, parasailing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Check out this Jetski safari tour. If you fancy seeing more then this tour even goes out to two of the Whitsunday Islands.
- Relaxing on the town’s pristine beaches and soaking up the sun.
- Shopping, dining, and entertainment on the town’s bustling esplanade.
- Taking a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands. Book a 1-hour flight over the Whitsunday Islands here.
- Going on a sunset cruise to admire the stunning views of the surrounding waters. Seeing a sunset out on the water is an unmissable experience in Airlie Beach. Book a sunset sail here.
- Experiencing the vibrant nightlife scene with live music, beachfront bars, and late-night clubs. Definitely check out The Boat House (Boaty’s) especially if you are staying at Nomads as you get discounts.
- Reef Sleep! This tour allows you to sleep under the stars on a purpose-built pontoon on the Great Barrier reef. Thats a once in a lifetime experience.

Hostels: For those on a budget, there are several backpacker hostels in the town that offer affordable dormitory-style rooms.

- Magnums – Offers private rooms at a really good rate. There is also a huge bar located at the front of the property. The bar/nightclub also hosts live music regularly so be sure to have a look even if you aren’t staying here.
