Queensland, Australia, is a diverse and vibrant state, offering a range of attractions and activities for visitors to enjoy. A two-week itinerary through Queensland can take you from the bustling city of the Gold Coast to the tranquil beaches of Agnes Waters and the stunning natural beauty of Magnetic Island. Plan the ultimate adventure with this detailed 2 week Queensland itinerary!
Gold Coast – 2 nights
There is no better place to start your Queensland itinerary than the Gold Coast. Long stretches of golden sand, endless sunshine and crashing waves make the Gold Coast one of Australia’s best destinations for travellers. The sight of the high-rise buildings meeting the ocean along the miles of coastline is a view to behold. The beach vibes of the gold coast are real and there is no better place to explore this iconic area than Surfers Paradise. It’s the perfect place to start your QLD adventure.
Where to stay
Budd’s backpackers is in an amazing location its only 100m from Budd’s Beach which is a great place for the sunset and 200m from Surfers paradise beach. It’s roughly a 5-minute walk to the city centre and public transport. The rooms are basic, but the hostel has a bar and runs nightly activities. They also have a pool onsite which makes it super easy to meet other travellers. I stayed here for two nights and I almost postponed the next leg of my trip to stay here longer. The staff were great and gave recommendations of things to do in the area and they also have bikes and surfboards available for hire from reception. 10/10 would recommend it.
BUNK hostel is also centrally located and only 100m from the beach. The bunks are a unique setup so that it doesn’t feel as though you have someone sleeping on top/below you and they are only accessible from one side. The hostel isn’t as social as Budds as they don’t have an onsite bar but there is a bar next door which offers discounts to travellers staying at BUNK.
Things to do
- Markets – There are beachfront markets at Surfers Paradise every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 4 pm to 9 pm. It’s a mix of local vendors selling crafts and various goods and food trucks. Carrara Markets are the largest permanent market in Australia with over 300 stalls. The market is open every Saturday and Sunday 8 am to 3 pm.
- Beaches – Surfers paradise is the original Gold Coast suburb and the beach is a must-do on any QLD itinerary. This is a classic Aussie beach and you could spend all day here laying in the sun and swimming in the waves (just make sure you stay between the flags).
- Budd’s beach is a hidden little gem and has a little recreation area where you can make use of the free BBQs. I recommend getting some supplies from the local shopping centre and heading here for a sunset BBQ and a few drinks.
- Check out Brisbane – The Gold Coast is roughly an hour south of Brisbane so if you’ve never been it’s worth heading into the city for a look and possibly a ride on the Wheel of Brisbane.
- Sky point observation deck – The SkyPoint Observation Deck is one of the coolest ways to see the Gold Coast. The deck is 77 levels up and offers panoramic views. If you are feeling adventurous you can even try your hand at the SkyPoint Climb Australia’s highest external climb. I wasn’t game enough for that one. A single-entry pass will set you back around $85.
- Theme Parks – Experience the thrill of the theme parks, such as Dreamworld and Movie World. Pick up a pass here.
Noosa – 2 nights
Moving up to the sunshine coast just north of Brisbane is Noosa. A world-class surfing destination with year-round warm weather and a very low number of rainy days Noosa boasts one of the best climates in the country. There is plenty to do and no end of beautiful sights to explore.
Where to Stay
Walking distance to the beach, has a pool runs activities and events throughout the week and every room either includes an ensuite bathroom or there is one right next door. Also, breakfast is included and they offer free surfboard hire.
Bounce only opened in 2021 so the facilities are top-notch. They also offer more upscale private rooms.
Things to do
- Learn to Surf – It doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned pro or taking to the waves for the first time there is a break for everyone. Noosa main beach is a great place for beginner surfers. If you are not much of a surfer, its stunning white sand and small break make it a great place to lay out and enjoy the sun. You will find a number of local outfitters offering lessons. You can book lessons here also.
- Fairy Pools – These pools are a hidden gem that should not be missed. Located in the Noosa National Park, these crystal-clear pools and cascading waterfalls are a photographer’s dream come true. The walk to the pools is a scenic one, with lush rainforest and stunning coastal views. Swimming in the pools is a refreshing and rejuvenating experience, surrounded by nature’s beauty.
- Noosa Everglades – It is a section of the Noosa River and covers an area of approximately 15,000 hectares. The Everglades is known for its clear, tea-coloured waters, and its unique vegetation, including paperbark and mangrove forests. It is a popular destination for recreational activities such as boating, kayaking, fishing, and wildlife viewing, as it is home to a diverse range of species, including many species of birds, fish, and reptiles. This cruise even offers the choice to go canoeing.
- Australia Zoo – It was founded by the late Steve Irwin and his family, and is dedicated to conservation and the protection of wildlife. The zoo is home to a diverse range of animals, including reptiles, birds, marsupials, and mammals, many of which are native to Australia. Visitors can experience up-close encounters with the animals, including opportunities to feed and pet some of the animals, as well as witness live shows featuring birds of prey and reptiles. Book here to get transfers, entry and a Koala cuddle.
Agnes waters – 2 nights
This hidden gem is known for its stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and relaxed, laid-back lifestyle. With its beautiful natural surroundings and peaceful atmosphere, Agnes Waters is the perfect destination for travellers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. The town is also a hub for adventure activities, such as surfing, fishing, and snorkelling, making it a great place for thrill-seekers. - Lady Musgrave Island – Day cruise to Lady Musgrave Island and snorkel on the Great Barrier Reef.
- Surfing – Agnes Waters is known for its excellent surf conditions, making it a popular destination for surfers of all levels.
- Snorkelling – Explore the underwater world of Agnes Waters and its vibrant coral reefs, home to a diverse range of marine life.
Airlie Beach – 3 nights
Airlie Beach is a picturesque coastal town located in the heart of the Whitsunday Islands, Australia. Known for its turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and relaxed island vibe, it is a popular destination for those seeking a tropical getaway. From exploring the stunning Whitsunday Islands and snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef to trying your hand at stand-up paddleboarding and sampling local cuisine, there’s never a dull moment in Airlie Beach.
Where to stay
Located right in the centre of Airlie Beach Nomads is a great option for a base. It’s a very social hostel and is located right next to the Shed Bar and Boaty’s (they even offer discounts if you show your room key).
Offers private rooms at a really good rate. There is also a huge bar located at the front of the property. The bar/nightclub also hosts live music regularly so be sure to have a look even if you aren’t staying here. It is a little less social than Nomads so if you are a solo traveller, it may be a little harder to meet people. Although if you are staying in town after doing a tour on the Atlantic Clipper or New Horizon, they are perfect as you get some privacy, and you will have already met tons of new friends on the boat.
Things to do
- Sail on the Whitsundays New Horizon/ Atlantic clipper – These boat tours are targeted at young travellers 18-35 who are looking to meet new people and see the sights whilst in the Whitsundays. When I went, we had overcast weather, so it wasn’t the best time for seeing the sights but the people on board made up for this completely and it was honestly one of the highlights of my trip. I still keep in touch with multiple people from the boat and I even ended up travelling with some of them for the rest of my journey. The boat has plenty of activities to keep you entertained and you get to see all the sights.
- Check out the local bars – There is one main strip of Airlie Beach and there is no shortage of great Cafes and Bars to check out. Why not start at one end and drink your way to the other? It makes for a great night and the town is full of other travellers, so you are sure to meet plenty of new mates along the way.
- Hiking – Take a hike through the lush tropical forests and rolling hills of the Conway National Park, offering stunning views of the surrounding coastline.
Magnetic Island – 2 nights
Where to stay
This hostel has one of the most stunning locations I have seen for a hostel in Australia. It is located right on the beach and is only a short walk or bus ride from the ferry terminal. They also have music or activities each night at the bar.
Things to do
For such a small island Maggies has no shortage of things to do. Complete the Forts walk and see if you can spot Koalas in the wild, hike to one of the many lookouts, and one of my favourite activities hire a topless car and drive from one end of the island to the other. I have a full guide of the best things to do on Magnetic Island here.
Cairns – 3 nights
Cairns is a tropical paradise located in Far North Queensland, Australia and the place where we will end this 2 week Queensland itinerary. With its lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and breathtaking Great Barrier Reef, it is a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Whether you want to explore the ancient Daintree Rainforest, snorkel in the turquoise waters of the reef, or relax on a tropical beach, Cairns has something for everyone.
Where to stay
Don’t stay at Gillian’s
This hostel was by far the most recommended hostel from everyone I spoke to on my trip. Unfortunetly it was completely booked out the entire time I was in Cairns. Definetly try and book here if its available.
This hostel was located a little way out of the main area but was by far the easiest hostel to meet people I found in Cairns. Everyone was super friendly and they have a bar and pool onsite. The kitchen was the only downside. There are so many people staying here long term there wasn’t any room in any of the fridges. The bar has really good meal deals though so it works out.
If you are looking to be close to the action and still have a party vibe then bounce may be the hostel for you. It smaller and more social than Gillian’s but most people staying there have been or will be there long term (That is a common theme in the hostels in Cairns).
Cleaner than Bounce and still close to the city center. Still a social hostel just a bit quieter on the party vibes.
Things to do
- Explore the Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation – I did a day trip to the Daintree with Uncle Brian’s tours. They were highly recommended by so many people I met whilst on this trip and I can see why. There were lots of other solo travellers on the trip and the tour guides played icebreakers whilst on the bus and they even organise a meeoutncup that night after your tour. The guide will even take photos throughout the trip during the day, and they post them in an album at the end so that everyone has access. This was a great way to see the sights, learn about the area and meet lots of new people. I booked the tour through get your guide here.
- Snorkel or dive on the great barrier reef – I booked this tour through Get Your Guide also and it was an absolute blast. I just did the snorkelling, but they also offer the option to do a beginner dive with no experience necessary. They take you to a number of different dive sights on the great barrier reef. I saw so many fish and coral and even got to swim with a turtle. Don’t forget your GoPro on this one. Lunch is also included, and the boat is huge so there is plenty of room. They provide all of the equipment you need, and they even had prescription snorkel masks available to use so didn’t have to use contacts. Just make sure you make use of the free sunscreen on board and apply regularly as I did come back with a sunburn.
Kuranda Scenic Railway – Enjoy a scenic train journey through the lush tropical rainforest to Kuranda, a vibrant mountain village offering unique shopping and dining experiences. Get tickets here.
Atherton Tablelands – Visit the stunning Atherton Tablelands, a fertile plateau offering a range of scenic drives, waterfalls, and hiking trails, showcasing the diverse natural beauty of the region. Uncle Brians also offer a tour doing this circuit and it come highly recommended. book here.
Night Market – Explore the vibrant night markets of Cairns, showcasing a range of local produce, crafts, and souvenirs, and savor the local cuisine, with its range of food stalls and restaurants.
